The Dominican Sisters of the Presentation established the first community in Tamil Nadu, Arakkonam Taluk in the village of Soganur on October 24, 2001, in the Vellore Diocese. Sisters were invited by Fr. G. Mathias the founder and correspondent, of the development of Soganur village and it was accepted by Bishop of Vellore.
Soganur is a remote village almost 13 km away from Arakkonam. People of Soganur belong to Dalit (sc). Most of them are Hindus and we have 65 catholic families. The village has no established industries to work. Most of them are landless and they work as laborers in others land. They only depend on agriculture and daily wages so they find it very difficult to earn their daily bread. In our Parish there are three substations, in recent times children and youth are getting involved in a lot of Church activities and people contribute their services to the Church. We have a school on the Church campus that belongs to Vellore Diocese. Children who are being educated are from a poor family and most of the parents are illiterate. Parents are giving more importance to their children’s education.
